Turtle Nesting Season is Here
Now is your chance to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Friends of the Archie Carr Refuge invite you on an educational daytime turtle walk. Walks start at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays in August and 2 Saturdays in September. The duration is approximately one hour.
This event starts with a brief presentation in the air-conditioned auditorium. Next, the group will head to the beach to observe the results of a nest excavation. The contents of a recently emerged nest will be dug up and displayed. Our volunteers will show what can be learned from excavating a nest, including the hatching success rate.
When available, hatchlings will be released for public viewing under a permit from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The releases include hatchlings found by the University of Central Florida research students as well as the occasional hatchlings found in the excavated nest. During 2016, hatchlings were available for more than 80% of the daytime walks.
Watching hatchlings walk to the Atlantic and swim away is a memorable experience for adults and children.Wednesdays: August 9, 16, 23, 30
